Welcome to the New Faculty in Physics:
Lubos Mitas
Celeste Sagui
and
Albert Young
Congratulations to Harald Ade, who recently received the K.F.J. Heinrich Award at the National Meeting of the Microbeam Analysis Society in Philadelphia.
His research group at NC State is interested in the development of novel X-ray and photoemission microscopies and their applications. Of particular interest is the quantitative mapping of the composition and the determination of orientation of specific functional groups in multi-component polymers and polymer composites at high spatial resolution and the relationship of the structure to important properties in these materials. Compositional characterization is primarily achieved via Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. NEXAFS microscopy in transmission was pioneering by H. Ade and collaborators in 1992.
Working with Students with Disabilities: Statement of compliance on Course Syllabus: The University has a set of required information that must be included on a course syllabus. Part of this required information is a reference to the University Policy on Working with Students with Disabilities. This policy is available on-line at:www.ncsu.edu/provost/hat/current/appendix/appen_k.html
If you have not included a statement on your syllabus, please indicate in class that you intend to fully comply with the University's policy.
The entire list of requirement for syllabi is available on line atwww.ncsu.edu/provost/academic_regulations/syllabus/reg.htm
Nuclear Physics Long Range Plan. In response to a charge from DoE and NSF, the US nuclear physics community is updating its long range plan, last issued in 1996. Four town meetings are being held this fall: on "electromagnetic and hadronic physics" (at Jefferson Laboratory), on "nuclear matter at high energy densities" (at Brookhaven), on "nuclear structure and astrophysics" (at Berkeley), and on "astrophysics, neutrino physics, symmetries, and UCN's" (at Berkeley). Chris Gould serves on the planning committee for both Berkeley meetings
Temporary Moves. Due to the Cox Air Quality Improvement Project work on the 4th floor, some people have temporarily moved to alternate offices.

Recent and Upcoming Travel:
Chris Gould, to University of Rostock, Germany, to lecture at the International School on "Violations of CP Symmetry and Related Problems."
Chris Gould and David Wood, to Washington, DC, to attend the National SPS Council meeting and quadrennial meeting of Sigma Pi Sigma.
Committee Assignments have been distributed in the department's mailboxes. Please note two ad-hoc committees on "Computational Sciences", and on "Website" in addition to the new "Personnel" committee, and the new "Staff - Faculty Liaison" committee. As always, graduate students are invited to serve on any of the Department committees. If you would like to participate please give your name and preferred committee to Chris Gould.
