Electronic submission of course grades. Faculty can now submit their course grades on the web at www2.ncsu.edu/reg_records/adm_frnt.html

Faculty choosing this option will not need to submit the opscan grade rolls. Grades submitted by 5:00 PM Monday through Friday will be posted to the student's records that night. It is not necessary to submit all grades at the same time or on the same day.

Additionally, there is an option for electronic posting of the student's final exam score. Final exam scores will be available for the student to view, but will not be part of the student's permanent record.

Congratulations to Michael Binger, finalist for the APS 1999 Apker Award. He will give a presentation to the Selection Committee in Washington, DC, August 28th. This is the third Apker finalist from NC State since the prize was instituted in 1978.

University Regulations Pertaining to Classes. For more information please review www.ncsu.edu/provost/academic_regulations/beg_of_semester.html

COURSE SYLLABUS: Teachers are to provide students with a course syllabus (electronically or hardcopy) on the first day of class, which will help prevent misunderstandings and allow both instructor and student the opportunity for advance planning.

TEACHER OFFICE HOURS: All teachers should schedule time during each week when they are available to meet with students.

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS: Teachers in 100- and 200-level courses must prescribe to the university's attendance regulation.

GRADING SCALE: All courses and all students in courses are subject to the use of the +/- grading scale. Teachers are responsible to determine the performance recognizable by each grade.

EARLY EVALUATIVE FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS: Consistent with the 6 week course drop policy, teachers are urged to provide evaluative feedback to students before the end of the drop period.

Internationalization Seed Grants. The Committee on international Programs has created a program intended to assist NC State faculty in initiating research and other scholarly professional activities that address international subjects and enhance internationalization of the university.

There will be six to ten awards each year with a maximum award of $5000. Applications are available in the Physics main office and are due by October 15, 1999.

"A Century of Physics" Posters: John Hubisz has two copies of "A Century of Physics" at least one of which we would like to be prominently displayed. A classroom or the SPS or graduate student area seems too restrictive. Yet high traffic areas would call for good protective covering. There are 11 posters in the set and they take up quite a bit of space.

If you have any ideas for display locations, please let John know.

Alumni News:

Eric Doggett, BS Physics 1981, has recently been appointed as the new CEO of Glenayre Technologies, a Charlotte-based provider of paging and other wireless communications systems. He is profiled in the July 29 edition of the Raleigh News and Observer.

His experience includes two years as a consultant in Saudi Arabia, 12 years experience with Nortel Networks, an MBA from Duke, and two years with Tandem Computers in California.

Recent or Upcoming Travel:

Jackie Krim: To Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH, for research collaboration; and to Andover, NH, to present an invited talk at the Gordon Conference on Dynamics at Surfaces.
