Others participating from Physics were John Hubisz, Phil Stiles, Chris Gould, Steve Reynolds and Charlie Johnson.
Congratulations to Vincent Meunier, winner of the Spring "photon momentum in water" puzzler. He gets coffee for two. Ask him to explain the solution!
The Fifth Annual Spring Meeting of the North Carolina Section of the AAPT met March 17and 18, 2000, at Davidson College in Davidson NC. New officers in the NC-AAPT include NC State alumnus Chuck Bennett of UNC-Asheville as president-elect, John Hubisz as Secretary-Treasurer, and NC State alumna Prabha Ramakrishnan of Carteret Community College as the new Vice-President.
Faculty Annual Reports Now Due! The annual faculty activity reports should be submitted to Phyllis Breedlove, preferably electronically in MS Word format. The report format is that same as the last several years. Please pay attention to the peer review requirements: an annual visit at a mutually agreed upon time by a faculty member of your choice.
Chill Water Loop to be Shut Down: No process chill water - no air conditioning in Cox, Dabney, Bureau of Mines: April 20 through April 24.
The brickyard chilled water loop will be shut down late afternoon on Thursday, April 20 and will remain off until sometime on Sunday, April 24. This outage is part of the Dabney-Cox chiller project. The chilled water lines will actually be drained during the outage so that they can be cut and new connections installed.
Note that Friday, April 21, is Good Friday and is an official university holiday.
The building temperatures will rise -- how much will depend on the outside temperature.
It is important that instruments which use chilled water for cooling be switched to domestic water or kept off during the outage. Instrument cooling switch-over should be completed by 4:00 PM on Thursday, April 20 as the chilled water lines will be drained overnight in preparation for work to commence at 7:00 AM on Friday, April 21.
New Location for Departmental Graduation Ceremony! For this Spring the Physics graduation ceremony will be in the Science House- Suite 1200, Research Building 4 on Centennial campus on May 20 at 1:30pm. The usual reception will follow, outside on the patio area if the weather is good, otherwise inside. (Recall there will be no power in Cox Hall that weekend, so our usual location, Cox 206, was not an option). The main University ceremony will be in the new arena, starting at 9:00 AM. Please participate by joining the faculty processional.
Summer Teaching Opportunity: Any post doc or graduate student interested in teaching a course (PY 211 or PY 212) in the second summer session (July 5 to August 11) please contact George Parker, Cox 415 (515-7022).
Software Audit. Is all your software authorized? The University is conducting ongoing audits of software on computers on campus. Please remember that it is against University regulations and a violation of copyright to have unauthorized copies of software on University-owned computers.
Annual Faculty Retreat. Topic: "Partnering and Hiring in an Interdisciplinary World: How do we make it work for Physics?"
The annual Physics Faculty retreat is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17 at the Marriott at RTP. All regular faculty and EPA staff with teaching duties are invited to attend. Please let Becky Savage know by Thursday, May 11, if you will be attending. Maps to the Marriott will be distributed in faculty mailboxes at a later date.
Power Outage in Cox Hall. The dates of the scheduled power outage for Cox Hall have been set. There will be no electrical power at all in Cox Hall from 5:00 PM Wednesday, May 17 through 7:00 AM Tuesday, May 23 to allow the main building electrical panel to be replaced as part of the Cox-Dabney Air Quality Improvement project. Dabney Hall should not be affected by this power outage.
