Physics Department graduate students and faculty were honored
at the 19th annual Awards Banquet of the NC State Association for the Concerns of African-American Graduate Students (ACAAGS) on April 5 at the McKimmon Center. Of the seven university-wide awards for which graduate students are eligible, three awards were won by physics students.

The Chancellor's African-American Leadership Award was won by Willyetta Brown. Ms. Brown was cited for her contributions to teaching and recruitment efforts in the department and college as well as her outreach efforts in the greater community. Specifically mentioned were her work at Shaw University, The Sankore School, and in the Adolescence Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program.

James Burnette took home the ACAAGS Graduate Research Award. Mr. Burnette works with Professors Nemanich and Sayers using extended x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques in the study of surfaces and interfaces of silicides.

Michael Taylor, the current president of ACAAGS, won the Service/Leadership Award. Mr. Taylor was specifically cited for his work in establishing the first 5k run for Prostate Cancer education and research. The run will be held later this year on the NC State campus.

Professor Hans Hallen was a PAMS nominee for the ACAAGS award for African-American Advocacy. The award is made annually to a faculty member or administrator whose efforts have led to the advancement of African-American causes at NC State.

Annual Faculty Retreat. The annual Physics Faculty retreat is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 at the Marriott at RTP. All faculty, and EPA personnel with teaching duties, are invited to attend. Please let Becky Savage know by Thursday, May 10, if you will be attending. Maps to the Marriott will be distributed in mailboxes at a later date.

Reminder: NO tests in the last week of class.
University policy prohibits faculty giving tests during the last week of class. Exemptions must be approved in advance by the Department Head and the Dean. (NC State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching, p 5-14.)

Posting Grades: Faculty may post grades (test or final) by social security number, provided that they have written permission from the student. Without such written permission, neither the grade NOR the social security number with a blank grade may be posted. Students may give permission on a test by test basis, or at the beginning of the semester. If they give permission at the beginning of the semester, that permission should be revocable at any time during the semester. Grades may also be posted by some number other than the student's ID number without getting student permission. Additional information is in the NC State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching, p 5-18.

Does Cox 400 need some artwork? Cox 400, the physics conference room, is used for a variety of meetings on a regular basis. The suggestion has been made that the room would look nicer with a few pieces of art on the walls. Posters? Prints? Paintings?

We would welcome any input, for or against adding artwork, and suggestions as to what sort of artwork, if any, might be appropriate. Please send comments and suggestions to Robert Egler at robert_egler@ncsu.edu.
