Congratulations to Gail McLaughlin, recipient of an Outstanding Junior Investigator Award from the US Department of Energy. OJI's are the equivalent of NSF's Career awards and Gail is the first OJI recipient for the Department of Physics. The title of her work is "Physics of Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts: Weak Interactions and Elemental Synthesis".
Cecilia Upchurch is moving up. Effective May 1st Cecilia will be taking the newly created position of Office Manager for the Center for High Performance Simulations, directed by Jerry Bernholc.
Congratulations to David Carbonell, sophomore physics major and student in PY413. David ran a 3:05 in the Boston Marathon on Monday. He finished about 1500 out of more than 15,000.
Congratulations to James W "Jimmy" York Jr.(Physics BS 62, PhD 66) to be inducted as an alumnus member of Phi Beta Kappa at the May 1 induction ceremony in the Talley Center. The event starts at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome to attend.
Lab Safety Plans: Department copy needed. We are cooperating with the Dean's office to better track the status of lab safety plans in the department. Whenever a new safety plan or an annual revision of a safety plan is submitted to Environmental Health and Safety, please also send a copy to Robert Egler.
Package Delivery: Some packages NOT accepted if shipped to 110 Cox. Please remember that in the interest of safety the Physics Department does not accept delivery in the main Physics office of any packages labeled any of the following:
Flammable Toxic Hazardous Biohazard
Please make arrangements to have any such packages delivered directly to your lab.
The University Awards for Excellence luncheon will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the McKimmon Center at 11:45 a.m. Carol Gilbert, SPA and Joyce Hilliard-Clark, EPA are the PAMS nominees this year. Please join us in congratulating them and cheering them on.
Tickets will go on sale beginning, Tuesday, April 16, 2002 and may be purchased from Denise Seabrook at 3-2300 or dseabro@math.ncsu.edu. The cost of the tickets for the luncheon will be $7.00 per person, by check or money order only, made payable to NCSU. May 24th is the last day tickets can be purchased and seats are limited so it is best to purchase your tickets early.
The annual Physics Faculty Retreat is scheduled for Monday, May 13, at the conference room at Lake Wheeler Park. All faculty and EPA Staff with teaching duties are invited to attend. The GSPA President is also invited (or a GSPA-designated graduate student.)
The retreat will feature a mini faculty research symposium (limit of 5 minutes and 1 transparency per person) and moderated discussions on graduate and undergraduate curricula.
Please let Becky Savage know by May 8 if you will be attending and inform her if you want a vegetarian lunch. A map to the retreat will be distributed this week.
Teaching and Learning Workshop: Sponsored by the College of PAMS and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL), the Teaching and Learning Workshop will be held Monday, May 20, in the Faculty Senate Chambers. Lead by Virginia Lee and Alan Lettarte from the FCTL, the theme is "Where are we taking our students and how will we know when we get there?"
The morning session from 9:00 to noon will be Designing Effective Learning Experiences for Students.
The afternoon session from 1:00 to 4:00 will be Assessing Student Learning.
