REMINDER! Power Outage in Cox Hall. There will be no electrical power at all in Cox Hall from 5:00 PM Wednesday, May 17 through 7:00 AM Tuesday, May 23 to allow the main building electrical panel to be replaced as part of the Cox-Dabney Air Quality Improvement project. Dabney Hall should not be affected by this power outage.

Welcome to Leslie Moon, who will be joining the Department as book keeper. Leslie has both an Associate's and a Bachelor's degree in accounting, and bring with her 6 years of employment experience in accounting.

PAMS Faculty Meeting. The Spring Faculty Meeting for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences will be Tuesday, April 25, 3:30 to 5:00 PM, in Dabney 124. Refreshments will be available at 3:00.

Reminder: No Tests in Last Week of Class: University policy prohibits faculty giving tests during the last week of class. Exemptions must be approved in advance by the Department Head and the Dean. (NC State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching, p 5-14.)

Posting Grades: Faculty may post grades (test or final) by social security number, provided that they have written permission from the student. Without such written permission, neither the grade NOR the social security number with a blank grade may be posted. Students may give permission on a test by test basis, or at the beginning of the semester. If they give permission at the beginning of the semester, that permission should be revocable at any time during the semester. Grades may also be posted by some number other than the student's ID number without getting student permission. Additional information is in the NC State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching, p 5-18.

New Student Orientation Volunteers Needed. New Student Orientation is initiating an opportunity for NC State students, faculty, staff, and alumni to participate in assisting our new students through the Orientation Volunteer Corps. The Corps will assist with a variety of Orientation tasks ranging from greeting students when they first arrive or taking part in the check-in process, to answering questions students have about the campus community. More information is available at 515-1234 or in the Physics main office.

Alumni News

Howard Lukefahr (M.S. 1986, under David Haase) is now on the Physics faculty at Whittier College in California. (Richard Nixon's alma mater). Howard was recently awarded a Research Corporation Grant for "Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid Kondo systems."

Brian Raichle (Ph.D. 1998, under Chris Gould and David Haase) will be joining the faculty at Appalachian State this fall after two years at Morehead State in Kentucky.

Mongolia Assistance Appeal. Mongolia is currently facing a deep post-socialist economic depression coupled with a series of natural disasters. The harshest winter in decades has caused the death of more than 2 million livestock, and threatened the livelihood of much of the rural population. Livestock such as sheep and horses are the only source of living for many of the nomadic herders. Undraa Agvaanluvsan from our Department is returning to Mongolia with her family on June 20th to provide help during the Summer. If you care to contribute financially, please give your donation to Becky Savage in the main office. Undraa will distribute assistance to people in the disaster areas, particularly in the Gobi desert where her husband's family lives.
