"Spotlight on..." Physics Staff. Our continuing series for recognition of the SPA staff in Physics. Every two months we'll feature another staff member on a poster in the glass cases near the Cox elevators and the "Physics News" bulletin board outside the main office toward Dabney.

April-May's featured person is

Cecilia Upchurch

Cecilia has been with the Physics Department since August 1992. Take a look at her "Spotlight" when you pass by the posters in April and May.

There will be a pizza lunch for Cecilia in Daniels 200 on Monday, May 5.

Departmental Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

At the Faculty Meeting on April 2 it was announced that Physics is the recipient of the 2003 Departmental Excellence in Teaching and Learning award from the Provost's office. The award includes a one-time award of $5000, and a recurring increase to the department's budget of $15,000 per year.

Congratulations to Yuriy Mischenko, awarded a SURA Fellowship for the second year.

Foreign students and post-docs may have trouble re-entering the United States.

Foreign students, post-docs, and some long-time visitors will face difficulties returning to the US after foreign travel unless their visas are valid beyond the date of their return to the US and are multiple-entry visas. Please take note of the following warning posted on the Web Site of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services of the Department of Homeland Security (formerly the INS):

"CAUTION: Due to recent changes to U.S. immigration law, travel outside of the United States may have severe consequences for aliens who are in the process of adjusting their status, extending their nonimmigrant stay, or changing their nonimmigrant status. Upon return, these aliens may be found inadmissible, their applications may be denied, or both. It is important that the alien obtain the proper documentation before leaving the U.S."

Foreign graduate students and post-docs are strongly urged to ask that the appropriate university authorities advise them before they leave the country. The American Physical Society is aware of a great many instances in which students and colleagues who have reapplied for F-1 and J-1 visas abroad have been stranded, some for as long as six months, waiting for adjudication of their visa applications.

Additional information is available at: www.aps.org/intaff/visa

and www.immigration.gov/graphics/index.htm .

Boxes no longer will be removed from hallways.

Up until now, we could simply put boxes to be discarded in the hallway, and Housekeeping would take care of them.

Effective today Housekeeping will no longer remove cardboard boxes from hallways or offices.

Please do not place cardboard boxes in hallways for disposal.

Individual faculty, staff, and students who receive items shipped in cardboard boxes are now responsible for breaking down the boxes and placing then in a cardboard recycling dumpster or otherwise removing them from the building. There is a cardboard recycling dumpster between Polk and Harrelson near the brickyard and another outside the northeast corner of Withers.

Additional information on recycling is available from the Facilities Operations Recycling Center at 515-9883 or 515-9882.

Annual Faculty Retreat.

The annual Physics Faculty Retreat is scheduled for THURSDAY, May 15, at the conference room at Lake Wheeler Park. All regular faculty and EPA Staff with teaching duties are invited to attend.

Please let Becky Savage know by May 8 if you will be attending. A map to the retreat will be distributed at a later date.

Law enforcement requests for information on students.

The FBI office in Raleigh has recently contacted the Graduate School to obtain information about individual international students of Middle Eastern origin. The Office of Legal Affairs has informed us that the University can provide "public" information about students. This information is also known as known as "Directory Information" and is located in ACS, under Registration and Records screen REG001, and is listed below.

PUBLIC INFORMATION:

  • NAME
  • HEIGHT AND WEIGHT (the University does not have this information)
  • ADDRESS
  • TELEPHONE NUMBER
  • DATES OF ENROLLMENT
  • DEGREE(S) CONFERRED
  • HONORS CONFERRED

Please note that some students may have selected a privacy block and thus their information should not be disclosed. In those cases, the information is not available through ACS, so it may not be an issue.

Beyond public information, faculty can voluntarily provide additional information about a student, but we recommend that if Homeland Security or the FBI requests information, they should be referred to NC State Legal Affairs.

Papers Published or in Press:

"General Theory of Quantum Field Mixing", C.-R.Ji and Y.Mishchenko, Phys. Rev. D65, 096015 (2002).

Alumni News:

Jeff Templon (BS Physics 1984, worked with Chris Gould at TUNL on an honors project) is currently a Senior Researcher at the Dutch National Institute for Nuclear and High-Energy Physics in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is working on designing, building, and testing Grid computing infrastructures for High-Energy Physics. When the LHC turns on in 2007 or so, most of HEP computing will be done using these Grids.
