Pride of the Wolfpack

From now through the end of the year, the College is pleased to be soliciting nominations for the 2006 Pride of the Wolfpack program.

The program recognizes permanent SPA/EPA employees at the College level for "on the spot" awards in recognition of a special or unique

contribution. Any one can nominate. Awards include clothing and other items from the NC State bookstore. See www.ncsu.edu/hr/pwa.html for nomination forms, university selection criteria, and information on the awards available.

The college can make up to 24 awards. This year we will make a nominal distribution of three awards to personnel in each of our five departments, four awards to College level personnel, and five "at-large" awards.

For this year the College is including two criteria for selection in addition to the university criteria:

1) A nominee in the Awards for Excellence program will automatically be a winner of a "Pride of the Wolfpack" award.

2) A winner in 2005, will not be eligible for an award in 2006 unless the departmental or college award quota has not been satisfied by December 1st

Thanks for you help in soliciting nominations.

Reminder: nominate through the website www.ncsu.edu/hr/pwa.html

Happy Birthday to

R. Egler, 3/5

G. McLaughlin, 3/27

J. Allen, 3/29

No Smoking in State Buildings

A recent inspection by the Fire Marshall’s office resulted in our being warned concerning smoking in Cox and Dabney, as several ashtrays with butts were found in rooms in Cox and Dabney.

The Fire Marshall requires that we notify the building occupants that by State Law there is no smoking allowed in any state building, including campus buildings.  Additionally, smoking is not permitted on the outside stair landings between Cox and Dabney.

Karen Daniels’ program is highlighted in AAAS Science News.

Karen Daniels and Robert Behringer of Duke University have discovered that vibrations can cause flowing beads to "freeze" into an orderly pattern like atoms in a crystal, a pair of physicists reports. The paradoxical observation could lead to deeper insights into disorderly solids such as glasses.  See the write-up at

Laser Safety Training Class

Laser safety training, required for users of class 3b and class 4  lasers is scheduled for Friday, March 24th , at the Environmental Health and Safety training room from 1:00 - 4:30.

Call for 2006 FRPD Proposals

There has been a second call for the FY2006 Individual FRPD Proposals.

The proposal amount will be $4,000 and will be due to PAMS Research/ Pre-Award Office (300 Cox Hall) on April 7th, 2006 by 12:00 noon. The proposal must be entered on PINS.

The individual investigator fund is intended to assist faculty members in initiating research and professional development activities.  A primary objective from an award should be to use the funding as "seed" money leading to support from outside granting agencies.  This funding is made available via a partnership of resources from the division of Research and Graduate Studies and your college Dean's office.

The proposal guidelines and procedures can be found at: www.ncsu.edu/sparcs/frpd/.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the PAMS Research/Pre-Award Office at 515-7865.

Accommodations for students with disabilities.

Faculty are reminded that Federal law requires that faculty provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.  The Disability Services Office (DSO) is available to help.  The DSO services and procedures can be found at http://www.ncsu.edu/dso, or you may call the office at 515-7652.

End of Semester Reminders:

NO tests in the last week of class. University policy prohibits faculty giving tests during the last week of class.  Exemptions must be approved in advance by the Department Head and the Dean.  See the NC State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching,

Posting Grades:  Faculty may post grades (test or final) by social security number, ONLY with written permission from the student.  Without such written permission, neither the grade NOR the social security or student ID number with a blank grade may be posted.
