This committee was largely responsible for turning around the ALS facility, to force a change in management and now usher into a new relationship between users and facility.

Congratulations to Becky Savage, who has accepted the position of Administrative Assistant to Chris Gould. Becky comes to the Department Main Office staff from her position with Physics on Centennial Campus.

Linda Fullerton, who had most recently served in the position, has resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Positions Open at Battelle. Battelle is now taking applications for the 2000 U.S. Army Summer Faculty Research and Engineering Program (SFREP). Information on the program, participating laboratories, and how to apply by email are available at the website:

Adverse Weather Employee Work Make-Up Policy.
A lengthy memo was recently distributed via e-mail to the faculty and staff in the Physics Department concerning the University's policy for employees who missed work due to the recent adverse weather. (Please note that the policy does not affect 9 month EPA employees.)

In brief, the University requires that "All employees who lose work time due to University closings or adverse weather and other emergency conditions must make up the time or take vacation leave in accordance with state policy and the Fair Labor Standards Act." This applies even in situations when the University is officially closed.

The NC Office of State Personnel (OSP) has extended the period in which time lost due on days between January 25 and February 4 may be made up. Time lost on those days must be made up within 24 months. Time lost on any other day is subject to the standard 12 month period.

Employees may not make up missed time in any week in which they are already working 40 hours.

For details of the policy, and further information, please refer to the full version of the policy distributed earlier, or contact:

Building and Construction - What's going on? As most people have noticed, there is considerable construction activity around the Cox-Dabney-Harrelson-Bureau of Mines area.

The construction activity south of Cox-Dabney is part of the year-long Cox air quality improvement project, which promises to significantly improve the air conditioning in Cox. Among other things, the project will give more localized control of the temperature in the building to help alleviate the chronic problem of some rooms being too hot while others are too cold.

Under Harrelson the second "pie wedge" class room is being built to provide proper space for the Physics Scale-Up teaching project.

Emerging Issues Forum is Thursday and Friday, February 24 and 25 at the McKimmon Center. Faculty can obtain tickets from the Faculty Senate Office. Students can contact the Dean's Office. All tickets are distributed on a first come / first serve basis.

Web Calendaring is now up and running for the faculty and staff signed up for the test program (Gould, Egler, Upchurch, Nemanich, Savage, Jenkins, Risley, Outlaw, Sayers, and Reynolds) A limited number of additional names can be included. If you are interested, e-mail to Chris Gould at Christopher_Gould@ncsu.edu.
