Congratulations to Jackie Krim, recently appointed as the Chair of the Education Committee for the American Vacuum Society, the Science and Technology Society, and also appointed as its representative to the AIP Liaison Committee on Physics Education.

Dr. Krim has also recently been elected Member-at-Large to the Executive Committee for the Division of Materials Physics of the American Physical Society, running on a platform of initiating focussed sessions at the APS March meeting of interest to Materials Physics students.

"Spotlight on..." Physics Staff. Our continuing series for recognition of the SPA staff in Physics. Every two months we'll feature another staff member on a poster in the glass cases near the Cox elevators and the "Physics News" bulletin board outside the main office toward Dabney.

February's featured person is

Jennifer Allen

Jenny has been with the Physics Department since November 1988. Take a look at her "Spotlight" when you pass by the posters in February.

There will be a pizza lunch for Jenny in Daniels 200 at 12:00 on February 27. See you there!

Classroom Improvement ideas solicited. Do you have an idea of how to improve one of the classrooms in Cox? Send your classroom improvement ideas to Robert Egler by February 10.( robert_egler@ncsu.edu. ) Please include a cost estimate (if known).

The classrooms eligible for Classroom Improvement Funds requests from Physics are Cox 200, 204, 206, 209, 214.

Calling all physics alumni and physics majors:

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has invited twenty physics departments (including NC State) to participate in an NSF supported pilot program to study ways to promote interaction between currently enrolled physics majors and local physics alumni. Maryland has an active program which brings physics alumni on campus on a regular basis. The objective of their program is to promote physics as a career path. They have found that physics alumni are excellent ambassadors for physics as a career preparation, and they found the interaction of alumni and students was viewed positively by both groups.

Here at NC State we currently host a once a year alumni-student dinner at which career opportunities are discussed. This year's dinner is Friday, February 7 in the Walnut Room - all students (undergraduate and graduate) are invited; give your name to Mark Harris SPS President for the meal count.

Seven of our undergraduate alumni will be there, other alumni in the area are also invited (contact SPS adviser John Blondin). As part of the AIP program we have agreed to sponsor up to four events a year. Ideas on how to promote alumni-student relations are welcome from everyone - seminars? talks? off campus visits? . Send your suggestions to Chris Gould ( chris_gould@ncsu.edu ). The activities we undertake will be written up in a booklet to be published by AIP in 2004.

Connecting in North Carolina. This is the ninth year of the "Connecting in North Carolina" faculty development program, sponsored jointly by the Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement.

The program is aimed at helping new faculty better understand their students' hometown roots, discover the diverse engagement roles performed by NC State across North Carolina, gain an appreciation for what the land-grant tradition means for the people of the state, and learn about our cooperative relationship while increasing awareness of the economy of North Carolina.

Join your colleagues on a comfortable coach for a five-day interactive tour across North Carolina. Experience the state from the Triad to the Albemarle sound.

Faculty and EPA Professional staff in Physics are encouraged to contact Chris Gould for an application form.

Expanding Your Horizons Conference 2003. The 11th annual Expanding Your Horizons conference will be March 11. An estimated 500 seventh grade girls and their teachers from across North Carolina attend this career awareness conference designed to motivate girls to enroll in challenging math and science classes in preparation for careers in related fields.

Representatives are needed for:

Female workshop presenters and career awareness panelists (by February 21)

Faculty, staff, and graduate students to act as guides (by February 28. Men are welcome to serve in this capacity.)

Anyone interested may call the Science House (515-6118) between 2:00 and 5:00 PM, or visit the website at: www.science-house.org/student/eyh.

Happy Chinese New Year!
