Congratulations to Karen Daniels who has received a National Science Foundation Career Award.

Congratulations to John Blondin, on his press release “NC State Scientist Discovers New Explanation for Pulsar’s Spin”, and for his article in Nature.

John Blondin, along with Anthony Mezzacappa at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, used the CRAY X1E supercomputer to develop a three-dimensional model of a pulsar’s creation, and in the process discovered that conventional wisdom concerning the formation of these celestial objects wasn’t correct.

Their findings are published in the January 4th edition of the journal Nature.

More Astro work in the news!

Congratulations to Steve Reynolds and Kazik Borkowski, who along with a team from NASA, Rutgers, and Naval Research Labs  have discovered a new class of supernova while studying Kepler’s Supernova, which occurred in 1604.  Details were presented at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Congratulations to Hans Hallen and Sasha Duel-Hallen on having their collaborative work on new tools to improve the quality of service for wireless customers highlighted in the NSF 2006 Performance and Accountability Report.  The report is available online at:

Physics Faculty attend PCSI Conference in Salt Lake City.

Physics faculty, Dave Aspnes, Gerry Lucovsky and Jack Rowe will attend the topical conference on Physics and Chemistry of Semiconductor Interfaces (PCSI) in Salt Lake City.  All three are members of the PCSI program committee and Dave Aspnes is also the editor of the conference proceedings. Jack Rowe is conference chair this year and Gerry Lucovsky has an upgraded/short-invited talk at the meeting.  NC State Physics has been active in this conference for more than 20 years; previous conference chairs were Gerry Lucovsky in 1984 and Dave Aspnes in 1997.

The annual Emerging Issues Forum will be held February 1st and 2nd, 2007 at the Jane S. McKimmon Center.  It is an informative and interesting event. Information pertaining to the forum can be found at the following URL:
