Chancellor Marye Anne Fox was elected as President Elect of Sigma Xi at the 100th Annual Meeting of Sigma Xi held in Minneapolis, MN, held November 5 to 7. She will become Sigma Xi President following the term of Jack Gibbons, recently retired Science Advisor to The President, who will serve as President from July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2001. The Annual meeting is held in conjunction with a topical forum, and is designed in large part to reinforce the forum topic. This year the topical forum was entitled "Reshaping Science and Engineering Education: Tools for Better Learning, " a topic which drew heavily on recommendations in the NRC Report "Transforming Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology." Both the forum and annual meeting drew heavily on interest and expertise of faculty at NC State. Three faculty members in Physics (Robert Beichner, John Blondin and John Hubisz) and one in Chemistry (Alton Banks) were invited program participants. Ray Fornes, who has served on the Sigma Xi Board and is Committee Chair of the Grants-in-Aid of Research also participated in workshops related to enhancing research participation by undergraduates. It was announced at the Forum and Annual Meeting that NCSU has been selected as one of the two host sites for an upcoming NSF sponsored workshops. John Blondin and Robert Beichner will be involved in the planning and implementation. Interested members of the NC State Chapter will be encouraged to participate.
State Employee's Combined Campaign (SECC) is now in its sixth week. Thanks to all who have participated. The College is 80% of the way to its goal. As a reminder, please remember to return all pledge forms to Anita Smith this week.
