10/4/2002

Welcome to Thomas Schaefer, who will be joining the Department in January 2003. Thomas is a Riken Fellow, a DoE Outstanding Junior Investigator, and is at present on the faculty at SUNY Stony Brook.

Congratulations to Michael Owen and John Blondin for providing the NASA Astronomy picture-of-the-day for September 27. Their fame lives on at: antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020927.html

Open House very successful for Physics. Overall attendance was higher than last year. We passed out 80 of our new color Physics recruiting sheets to interested students, and handed out mail-in cards to these students so Jenny Herbert in the PAMS office will have most of their names and addresses. We referred students and their parents to our web site for more information. The most commonly asked question was about getting a job after graduation with a BA or BS degree. We showed questioners a list from the AIP of all the companies in NC that have hired physics undergraduates. Thanks to George Parker, Robert Egler, and Mark Harris, SPS president, for their work at Open House.

Congratulations to Leslie Moon! Leslie and her husband Claude have a new baby girl. Lauren Jane Moon, born 10:23 p.m., October 3. Mother, baby, and father are all doing well.

Fall Break. The University will have Fall Break Monday, October 14 and Tuesday, October 15. There will be no classes on those days.

Research Ethics. With the recent scientific misconduct at Lawrence Berkeley and at Bell Labs making the news, the importance for Physics of making ethical and professional judgements in the conduct of research has never been higher. NC State recently has appointed a Director of Research Ethics, Dr. Gary Comstock, Professor of Philosophy.

Dr. Comstock will present the Inaugural Lecture "Research Ethics in the Research Triangle" at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, in the Walnut room of the Talley Student Center. All faculty and graduate students are invited. A reception will follow the lecture.

North Carolina State Fair! October 18 through 27.

Have some fun and see the agriculture of North Carolina at the NC State Fair, October 18 through 27 at the State Fairgrounds, just down the road from the University Club on Hillsborough Street.

Faculty - Staff - Graduate Student Appreciation Lunch! The Department is sponsoring a Shrimp-a-roo at noon, Thursday October 24th in Pullen Park at shelter number 5. Everyone is invited. The menu is (surprise!) shrimp, salad, bread, and soft drinks. Dick Patty will preside at the shrimp cooker. You can drive or walk over, and food will be served starting at 11:30 and until 1:30 p.m. Come any time.

Congratulations to Eric Doggett, recipient of the 2002 PAMS Outstanding Alumnus Award. Eric is President and CEO of Glenayre Technologies in Atlanta. His father, Wes Doggett, (Emeritus Professor of Physics) will be accepting the award for him later this month.

Welcome to the three new Department Heads in PAMS.

Sastry Pantula, Head of the Statistics Department. Dr. Pantula has been a member of the Statistics faculty since 1982, and has served as assistant department head, and director of graduate programs.

Bernard Mair, Head of the Mathematics Department. Dr. Mair comes to NC State from the University of Florida, where he was associate chair, graduate coordinator, and director of the University of Florida's Center for Applied Mathematics.

John Fountain, Head of the Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences Department. Dr. Fountain comes to NC State from The University at Buffalo where he was chair of the geology department.

No Hazardous Materials accepted in Physics main office. Please remember that in compliance with state and federal law and OSHA regulations, the Physics Department office will NOT accept delivery of any material labeled:

Hazardous
Flammable
Radioactive
Toxic
Biohazard.

Anyone ordering any of these materials should arrange to have the material delivered in the lab where the material is to be used.

Recent and Upcoming Travel

Michael Paesler and Willyetta Brown: to Orlando, Florida to present an invited talk sponsored by Optical Society of America (OSA) and participate in the Educational Forum. OSA is interested in teaching conceptual optics as a general education requirement for undergraduates.
