Campaign closure and Recognition of Dean Whitten's retirement. The end of this calendar year concludes a successful endeavor in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences to increase the permanent private support available for our brightest students and those with financial need. In addition, the end of this calendar year also marks the conclusion of Jerry Whitten's tenure as dean. The Campaign for NC State Students and the Dean's Retirement Committee ask that you mark the occasion with a gift to the campaign fund of your choice. You may wish to make a gift to the Jerry and Adela Whitten College Scholarship Endowment, a fund established during the campaign by the Whittens. Once fully endowed, this scholarship will provide renewable support for undergraduates in the college. For more information please contact Anita Stallings at 515-3462, or astallin@ncsu.edu.

L. H. Thomas Lecture a success. The 1999 L. H. Thomas lecture was presented on October 25 by Horst L. Stormer from Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies and Columbia University, Nobel Laureate in Physics 1998. The topic was "Fractional Quantum Numbers and Other Tales from Flatland." The lecture was followed by a banquet at the Velvet Cloak Hotel.

Thanks to Hans Hallen, Michael Paesler, John Risley, and Jennifer Outlaw for their help in arranging the visit.

Call for Seminar Speakers - Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Program. Speakers are sought for a seminar series for a educational consortium of eight North Carolina colleges and universities. The purpose of the seminar series is three fold: (1) to stimulate undergraduate student interest in research, (2) to recruit undergraduate students (future graduate students) for our summer intern program, and (3) to showcase NC State research and the important role it plays in our state and nation.

The seminars will be scheduled during the early portion of the spring semester 2000 from January to early March. Since class and seminar schedules at the participating institutions vary, the seminar times will also vary by institution. Speakers are sought who are willing to give one or more seminars during this time period at one or more of the participating institutions. Dates and times for each seminar will be arranged separately. A list of prospective speakers will be sent to each institution to facilitate selection and scheduling. Speakers will receive a $200 honorarium for each presentation and travel mileage.

Please suggest topics likely to be of interest to undergraduate science students. Since the support for this program is from Howard Hughes Medical Institute, it would be great if the talk could be related to the medical sciences but this is not required. You will be contacted for scheduling.

To volunteer for a seminar or for further information, please contact one of the following people:

Dr. David G. Haase, Director, The Science House, NC State University, 515-6118, David_Haase@ncsu.edu

Dr. Charles F. Lytle, Director, HHMI Science Exploration and Outreach Program, NC State University, 515-1170, Lytle_bio@ncsu.edu

Ms. Judy Powell, Coordinator, HHMI Science Exploration and Outreach Program, NC State University, 515-9402, Judy_Powell@ncsu.edu
