NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY - Department of Physics
Experimental nanoscale/biological physics
The Department of Physics at NC State University has hired six new faculty members
over the last two years and continues to seek highly qualified applicants in
all areas for tenure-track and tenured positions. Candidates in nanoscale science
and in biological physics are especially encouraged to apply at this time.
Successful applicants will have strong commitments to excellence in teaching
and will be expected to establish a vigorous research program. The Department
has active and internationally recognized groups in astrophysics; computational
physics; condensed matter, polymer, surface, and materials physics; nuclear
and particle physics; and physics education research. We plan to hire primarily
at the assistant professor level, but will also consider particularly qualified
senior applicants. NC State University is one of the vertices of the Research
Triangle Park, home to many industrial research campuses and federal and state
research organizations.
Candidates should send a curriculum vitae, a brief summary of research and teaching goals, and a list of at least three references to: Physics Personnel Committee (chair Dale Sayers), Department of Physics, Box 8202, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-8202. Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. degree in physics or a physics-related area. To receive full consideration, applications for the fall 2002 academic year should be received by December 31, 2001. Review of applications will begin immediately, but no final decision will be made prior to December 31, 2001.
NC State University is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. ADA accommodations: Rebecca Savage, 919-515-2522.
Red Wolf Ramble. As part of the Raleigh Arts Commission's Red Wolf Ramble project, each NC State college sponsored a wolf. There will eventually be 20 wolves on campus, and they will remain on display until sometime in February. NC State's wolves represent the greatest concentration of the 100-odd wolves being placed around Raleigh.
The PAMS wolf, representing the idea that the world is our laboratory, has just been placed on the Williams side of Harrelson. It is on a bricked planter and under a light. The college sponsored it through Foundation funds. After the Red Wolf Ramble exhibition period, the wolves will be auctioned off. Any profits from the auction of the PAMS wolf will go toward the PAMS Fund for Excellence.
2001 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Eric A. Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle, and Carl E. Wieman for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates. Note that this was an area discussed in the recent L. H. Thomas Lecture by
William Phillips.
Call for Applications: Teaching with Inquiry-guided Learning: A Professional Development Seminar for NC State Faculty: Inquiry-guided learning refers to an array of classroom practices that promote student learning through guided and, increasingly, independent investigation of questions and problems, often for which there is no single answer.
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning will offer a two-semester seminar during the Spring 2002 and Fall 2002 semesters for twelve, two-person department teams of faculty members from NC State. In the Spring 2002 semester each faculty member will either revise an existing course or create a new course that s/he will then teach in the Fall 2002 semester using principles of inquiry-guided learning. The application deadline is November 12, 2001
More information on inquiry-guided learning and previous Hewlett projects is available at:
