Visiting the Department
We encourage prospective graduate students to inquire about visiting the
campus. Of course the best time is during the school year when classes are
in session. Some travel funds are available to reimburse prospective students'
travel costs. Be sure to inquire.
Many students find that a Friday can prove to be an excellent day for a visit.
This leaves a weekend day on Saturday to get to know the Raleigh and Research
Triangle area. Also, often physics graduate students plan activities on Saturday
that can be incorporated into a prospective student's schedule. This gives
the visitor a chance to catch a glimpse of graduate student life in our university's
physics community.
Student who do visit should let the Graduate Programs Office know beforehand
if they would like to emphasize one specific area of physics in their laboratory
and office visits with our faculty. With a faculty of 43 and day that can incorporate
only a handful of visits, only a cross-section of our faculty can meet with
each prospective student. The Graduate Programs Office can tailor a prospective
student's visit around one or two specific areas (such as nano-technology,
optics, computational physics, materials physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics,
etc.) or - alternatively - schedule a tour that provides a visitor with a broad
sampling of many of our research areas.
Prospective students interested in touring the department should contact
the Graduate Physics Program Office.
