Financial Support
Most of the ~110 students in our graduate program are financially supported by Teaching
Assistantships (TAs), Research Assistantships (RAs) or Fellowships. Support generally
includes tuition (see time limits below) and health insurance, but not the student fees.
Teaching Assistantships
The program supports ~40 TAs, held primarily by students in their early semesters.
These positions are administered by a coordinator and decided upon by the Department
Head. TAs may involve teaching undergraduate laboratories, grading undergraduate or
graduate homework assignments, or other assignments. The stipend for a 9 month TA
in 2007/2008 is $15,750 (out-of state status) and $16,250 (in-state status) -
$21,000 and $21,660 on an annual basis, respectively. (Most TAs hold RAs or a summer
TA during the summer.)
Research Assistantships
Students may accept RAs offered by individual professors. The level of support of
an RA is determined by the professor offering the position and generally guided
by the level of support for a TA.
Fellowships
Students in our program have been holding a number of Fellowships that continue to
be available. These include
the GAANN Fellowship Program;
the Andrews Fellowship Program; and
the SURA-Jefferson Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program. Additional
information can be found at the Graduate School's
Financing Graduate Education page.
Obligations
Regularly enrolled students are expected to be registered for at least 9 credits
hours. Assistantships carry a working obligation of 15-20 hours a week that is in
addition to the (full-time) course load. Renewals of assistantships are contingent
upon satisfactory academic progress (GPA>3.0, passing of written exam, oral prelim
by 8th semester, satisfactory progress in research)
Details of Graduate School rules
A complete description of NC State Graduate School Policy concerning financial
support is available in the
Graduate Administrative Handbook under Chapter 4,
Financing Graduate Education. Most details are governed by
the Graduate Student Support Plan (GSSP). Since tuition is considerably higher for non-North Carolina
residents, all U.S. nationals should become North Carolina residents at the end
of the one-year legal requirement. Out-of-state tuition support beyond the GSSP
(10 semester limit) will be decided on an exception-request basis only and might
not be provided past the 12th semester.
